Black History

“Yes! My bed bunker is finally here! It took you long enough.” yelled the girl in Ellie’s room. “What? But I,” questioned Ellie.“That’s what we call each other here. I’m your bed bunker and you’re my bed bunker.” interrupted the girl, “How rude of me. I haven’t even told you my name. It’s Abby. I’ve been waiting for a bed bucker for so long! I’m so glad you came. Why don’t you have any bags with you? Everybody usually has a bag!” Abby was talking a little bet too fast for Ellie. “I feel nauseous.” said Ellie sitting in one of the desk chairs in the room. “Sorry. Sometimes I do that to people. I just get hyper really fast. Why, when Bailey told me I was getting a bed bunker,”  Now it was Ellie’s turn to interrupt, “Who’s Bailey?” Ellie thought that she recognized that name. “Bailey is one of the worker’s here. He’s the chef. He makes the best meals ever!”  Ellie started thinking with Abby still talking. She knew where that name was from now. Ellie thought back to when her dad was home one day before Max was born. “One of the things that I liked best about the army was the cooking. Bailey Jones was the best chef ever! You can meet him if you want. I never knew it but, he lives two houses away. I invited him to spend the night tomorrow. He insists that he cooks dinner. The only problem with Bailey is that he’s going to quit the army. He wants to be a pro chef and get on TV.” Then Ellie remembered meeting Bailey and having him feed them dinner. He indeed was the best chef ever. She hadn’t seen him on the cooking channels that Mom watched. And she watched a lot of cooking shows. Cooking was one of her hobbies. Apparently he didn’t make it on TV maybe instead he made it here. Maybe she could meet him. Maybe she could be with someone else that she knew from before besides Max.  “Hello, are you even listening to me?” Abby said breaking Ellie’s train of thought.   “What is Bailey’s last name?” Ellie asked“Why are you going so crazy on me? Are you supposed to be on a mission to kill Bailey Johnson?”“It’s him! Yes thank you so much! Can I see him right now? Where is he?”“No you can’t see him right now. You have to wait till lunch. He’s in the kitchen probably preparing some food for us. What’s up with you?”              “I should probably tell you about my life now.”“That would be nice”.“First of all, my name Elizabeth. I would rather you call me Ellie. I’m here because of the British. They killed both of my parents. My dad is dead because he was the general of the American Army. The British first took me and Max out of the house.” “Who’s Max?” “He’s my little brother. So as I was saying, they took Max and me out of the house to make us live bad lives . That’s what I think. They burnt my house down with my mom still in it. Along with Max and me they took out Andre my other little brother. He’s 3 days old today. He’s not here. He’s with Emily the other girl with us. She lives in the town but, we are not allowed to look at Andre, kiss Andre, or hug Andre. He is practically forbidden to us.” By now Ellie had tears running down her cheeks and almost sobbing. "I'm sorry to here that. It must be hard for you." Abby had never been in a situation like this before. "I have a brother too. His name is Aaron. He is here. Actually he's in the room across from us." "That's where Max is! How old is Aaron?" Ellie asked. "He's the same age as me, we're twins. How old is Max?" "He's 5. How old are you. You look about my age." "I'm 9. How old are you." "I'm 9 too." "What was your story?" Ellie questioned, "It's only fair that you tell me.” "It's not really a good one. My parents were not very nice. We lived in a bad neighborhood. My parents fought all the time. My dad more than my mom. He always hit my mom and yelled at Aaron and me. And he always drank. My mom tried to let us have a good family but, it was practically impossible. "One day he was too drunk. He killed my mom." Ellie noticed a tear running down Abby's face. "I told the police. They arrested my dad and tried to put Aaron and me in the local orphanage. I remembered that my mom said to not let anybody put me in any other orphanage besides this one because this is where she went when she was a kid and this is the only other place that I should call home. So I told Aaron about it and he remembered and he told the police and they brought us here. Nobody ever remembers my mom as a kid being here though." Then there was knock at the door. "Coming!" yelled Abby as she opened the door, "Yess? Oh! Hi James, can we help you."  "Actually I'm here to help you. It's lunch time. Abby, you need to keep track of time. That's why we give you the schedule." "Sorry. We'll be down in a minute." Abby stepped away from the door and turned to Ellie, "It's time for lunch. Now you can go meet Bailey even though I have no idea why you want to." If Ellie knew where to go, she would have jumped right out of her chair and headed strait for the door. This was it. She was going to see Bailey.
